Water-cooled chillers incorporate the use of cooling towers which improve the chillers’ thermodynamic effectiveness as compared to air-cooled chillers. This is due to heat rejection at or near the air’s wet-bulb temperature rather than the higher, sometimes much higher, dry-bulb temperature. Evaporatively cooled chillers offer higher efficiencies than air-cooled chillers but lower than water-cooled chillers.
Given the annual temperature range in this area, the savings were readily apparent. Whenever the outside air temperature falls below 70 °F, the return chilled glycol solution is automatically diverted through the integrated Free Cooling coils of the chiller. These coils are located across the inlet-air side of the air-cooled condensers and use the condenser fans to pre-cool the return glycol. As the ambient temperature falls, the pre-cooling increases – until at approximately 20 °F below the supply glycol temperature – the chiller operates entirely without compressors. The life cycle analysis of the two types of plants is also important to consider. Many factors contribute to the life cycle of a plant including location of the plant , electricity charge from the energy company, size of the building being serviced and maintenance personnel training and retention. There is also a limitation on the size of an air-cooled chiller, typically the maximum size is 500 tons.
