Laminate flooring is a much cheaper alternative to natural wood or stone floors

Also called a “floating floor,” laminate can be installed directly over your existing plywood subfloor or any other hard-surface floor, such as hardwood, concrete or linoleum. There is very little waste when using this flooring—unlike hardwoodflooring, laminate planks have no defects or imperfections. To further mimic natural hardwood products, they can be textured or embossed, such as laminate planks that resemble hand-scraped walnut flooring. Laminates range from AC1, for low-traffic areas, such as bedrooms, to AC5 for commercial use. Laminates sold for residential use come in AC1, AC2 or AC3. Commercial products, made to withstand the heaviest traffic, come in AC4 and AC5. Manufacturer warranties range from 10 years to 50 years, depending on the AC rating. For the DIY homeowner, laminate is an easy-to-install option that can be done fairly quickly.pvc flooring roll

Price isn’t the only advantage as these floors are aesthetically pleasing, easy to maintain, simple to install and durable. We set the criteria for reviewing the brands first and picked ten of the most popular. If you are purchasing from a flooring specialist, they will likely install it for you. Before choosing a company for installation, it is a good idea to read third-party reviews to ensure the company is reputable. Researching your options can save you money in the long run. You can also save by having an accurate estimate of how much a contractor will need to use. This may prevent you from getting overcharged for what you may not even need.

Don’t use cleaning solutions that leave waxy buildups or that are formulated for tile floors. Carpet is cheaper to install at $2 per square foot while laminate flooring is double at $4 per square foot installed. Don’t add a moisture barrier over an existing wood floor, because it will trap moisture and damage the subfloor. Use a foam underlayment instead, or whatever is recommended by the manufacturer of the flooring you buy. If you’re buying underlayment roll, get the roll as long as your room to avoid breaks. Tile and laminate flooring are both suitable for use with radiant heatingwith a few recommendations. For tile floors, a crack isolation system, a membrane applied between the subfloor2and the tile, is recommended to allow the flooring to expand and contract. Unlike tile, laminate flooring is susceptible to moisture damage. Water can seep into the joints of laminate, and this may result in swelling, warping, and discoloration.

In full bathrooms and damp locations such as basements, vinyl flooring materials excel over laminate materials. Sheet vinyl that comes in 12-foot wide rolls often requires no seaming, making it an excellent choice for a truly waterproof floor. Many types of vinyl flooring can look realistic, especially luxury vinyl plank flooring. Thicker solid core vinyl flooring will look more like wood since deeper embossing is possible. With vinyl plank flooring, the core layer is a thicker, multi-layer PVC vinyl. Luxury vinyl flooring comes in planks or tiles that interlock side-to-side to form a floating floor. The overall thickness for vinyl flooring ranges from 1.5 mm for sheet vinyl to 5 mm for luxury vinyl planks. Laminate floors are sometimes called laminate wood floors, though they are wood only in two respects. First, the laminate floor base consists of pressed chipped wood particles.

To be fair, laminate warranties aren’t very good across the board. All Select Surfaces laminate is backed by a Lifetime warrantyfor residential use, and most of it has a 10-year commercial warranty too. It’s 10mm to 14mm thick, and much of it comes with attached underlayment that speeds installation. It has a wear/abrasion rating of AC3, so it’s not heavy-duty flooring. The Home Depot sells cheap TrafficMaster flooring that’s backed by a warranty of just 15 years. Water-resistant X20 Dream Home laminate competes pretty well with Shaw Repel, Mohawk RevWood Plus and Pergo WetProtect, though it’s not as good as AquaGuard waterproof laminate. AquaGuard planks are coated twice for superior protection against water absorption. Poor-quality laminate starts at less than $1 per square foot – but Armstrong isn’t super cheap. Rich stone slab laminate looks like the genuine article – rich granite, limestone, slate, and other looks – but at a 95% savings over real stone.

This means that you can get the same quality materials as contractors and distributors do, for the same discounted prices. Nevertheless, our quality is top-tier and from the best brands in the industry, including Mohawk, Shaw, and Abbey. Vinyl floors start at around $1 per square foot for simple glue-down sheet vinyl. Prices can reach up to $5 per square foot for luxury vinyl planks. You get more for your money, however, as high-end luxury vinyl comes with features like a special waterproof core and a thicker wear layer. They’re both less expensive than other flooring materials like hardwood or porcelain tile. However, vinyl can get more expensive as you explore the luxury flooring options.

Place unopened packages of laminate flooring in the room or rooms in which they are to be installed. This should be done at least 48 hours before the laminate boards are placed so they have time to adjust to the temperature and humidity. This will minimize shrinkage or expansion when they react to room temperature and humidity. There’s a fiberboard core in most products, which can swell or soften if it’s exposed to moisture for a prolonged amount of time. This waterlogged center can eventually cause the top layers to peel away. So, laminate may not be an ideal option for rooms where high moisture is prevalent, like family bathrooms or laundry rooms. While vinyl and laminate flooring have a lot in common, there are a handful of important contrasts. When you’re deciding which to install in your home, it’s best to consider the needs of your home and the room you’re renovating. Qualities like being waterproof or comfortable to stand on can make or break your decision.
